I'd just like to connect to IRC without Fire crashing. If anyone
can tell me what I might be doing wrong here I'd love to hear it.

I've also had a couple of other experiences with Fire that don't
make sense to me ...

ICQ ...
My ICQ is set to require authorisation for people to add me to
their lists [& would rather leave it that way] but Fire doesn't
seem to give authorisation no matter how many times & do. My
"workaround" is to switch to the Mirabilis client, grant the
authorisation, & switch back to Fire ... Ouch!

I've also had no success with ICQ file transfers in either
direction. Is this because I'm getting something wrong or
because Fire doesn't yet support ICQ file transfers?

PGP ...
A few weeks ago one lister contacted me via ICQ suggesting we
exchange keys using Fire for the sake of practice. After a
couple of attempts either way it appeared that neither of us had
the other's key. A day or two later I had GPGKeys open & saw
that his key was there, he later reported that he'd resorted
getting my key from a server. He suggested that it might have
been an issue with the setup of my firewall & pointed me to the
ICQ page on the subject but alas my expertise with IPNR doesn't
yet extend to applying that advice in my firewall configuration.

For what it's worth my firewall is IPNetRouter. It's currently
setup to the most basic dual Ethernet firewall configuration as
recommended by SustWorks & I'll admit now that my current
expertise with it isn't sufficient for anything fancier than
that. I mention that just in case my firewall is a contributer
to any of the issues I'm experiencing. If anyone thinks my
firewall is part of my problems & can guide me in changing the
configuration I'd love to hear from you, email me off-list at
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> if you think that's a bit too far off-topic.

Cheers, Pedro :-)
