I have downloaded the worksheet previously cited by Don Williams:

Offenses Known to Law Enforcement by City 10,000 and Over in Population

http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/cius_01/xl/01tbl08.xls

and edited it a bit:

1. Made an adjustment to NYC to remove the homicides on 9/11/2001.
2. Added a column for the state (the two-character abbrevation).
3. Added a column for murder and non-negligent manslaughter per 100,000.
4. Removed the extraneous rows so the data is one continuous table.
5. Moved the footnotes to a separate sheet.
6. Enabled auto-filter (adds a drop-down list for each column)
7. sorted the entire table by the column added in #3.

You can download it from:

I'm not attempting to draw any particular conclusion -- only provide the
data in a form that can be easily sorted or filtered on your favorite
criteria.
