I get the feeling you want to push for git, because it is the 'new' and hip thing to do. Maybe you first need to make an inventory of the actual problems that developers of Firebird are experiencing with the use of Subversion (if any). And then investigate 1) if git would address those problems and 2) not introduce new and maybe worse problems.
