This problem exists only if you manually build firebird from sources. In all other cases distro's package manager will take care about installing required libraries. I suppose that people who want to build something themselves should have enough qualification to install required packages on chosen by them version of linux. PS. Ubuntu 10.10 netbook edition does not provide gcc out of the box.
