I needed to run aclocal and automake on my debian box too,
I have automake 1.13.3 here, and the version from the tree expects 1.12.6.

Perhaps we should add calls to aclocal and automake in
Makefile.in.extern.editline to be sure.

I have built 2.5 with this new editline on a VM with UBUNTU 5.10 using
gcc 4.0.2, automake 1.4-p6 and autoreconf 2.59 (I had to remove the
check for autoreconf version from autogen.sh), so it works even on quite
old systems.

As we are using it in production already since 2011 in our privat
builds, I believe it is safe to include it in the 2.5 tree.

BTW. even 3.0 is buildable on this old machine (I only had tu use
libatomic_ops instead of gcc's built ins)
