Ann and I know Peter and his wife Trudy very well. For most of the time we were there, Trudy was the other woman in engineering. Peter is much more of a theoretician than a developer, so he may not be fully up to speed on the practical implications of some of this stuff.
The MySQL engineering organization was a little weird, having architects (I was allegedly a Sr. Architect) but not having anything remotely resembling an architecture. I doubt there is any Firebird developer who couldn't teach any MySQL developer (my Falcon guys excluded, of course), a great deal about software architecture. Little things like well defined, stable interfaces, encapsulation, stable error codes, cross platform compatibility, and upwards compatible APIs would make MySQL a "better" product.
