IMHO, default should be backward-compatible behavior.
Actually, I think that such settings are not needed at all, they only make applications
support harder.
Introduce new data types in version 4, but leave functions as is. In version 5, when
application developers get used to new types, returned values of old functions may be
changed without using of MS SQL-style "SET ANYTHING ON/OFF", as it was done for result of
count().
