“so I guess this account is bonded to some google email account” When you subscribe it asks you to confirm an e-mail address you want associated with the group. I hardly every use my gmail account, so linked it to the same e-mail as the yahoo one and getting notifications come through.
But, yes, you have to log into the group via a google login.
