I open up Firebug on my gmail main page (http://mail.google.com/mail/
#inbox). I click on the HTML tab in Firebug. And then I try to
search.

There are a number of classes that are used in gmail such as "HSZged"
and "I94Sdc", both of which are used in the "Invite a Friend" box on
the left hand side, that search simply doesn't see. I type "HSZged" in
the search dialog and nothing happens. Some classes it can find, but
there are many it cannot. If I "inspect" the elements and poke
around in the HTML by hand I can see the classes clear as day.

For an even more obvious example, at the bottom of the gmail page it
says "Send messages from your other email addresses using your Gmail
account". But if you search for "Send messages" it will not be
found.

I'm using Firebug 1.3.2. Is there's something I'm not grasping about
how Search on the HTML tab is supposed to work? Is there a way to
make it work properly?

Firebug is so awesome in general, it's weird that search is so buggy
and useless. :-(
