Hi David, what version of Firefox do you use? Also, I would recommned to use 1.3.3 (missin in your list), which is the latest stable version (also available on AMO https://addons.mozilla.org/cs/firefox/addon/1843)
Firefox 3.0.6 + Firebug 1.3.3 works fine for me. Try to install this version into another new fresh profile.
