I have an unusual problem with the 1.4 alpha 12 release, it started about a week ago (I've been using Shiretoko, updating daily to the latest release.)
When the Firebug extension was enabled, no XHR callbacks ever happened. I could see in the console that the HTTP requests were getting made and data was coming back, but nothing happened with it. This did not happen with a new profile, so I tried disabling Weave (the only other extension that was enabled) and it all started working just fine. Clearly there's some kind of problem with the two of them interacting, I thought you should be aware. Whatever the problem is, it's survived a couple of Weave updates.
