Firebug will be enabled only for the pages you open it on.

That's a great solution, esp when combined with Firefox's -no-remote
option.

Firebug does not draw borders on the page unless you invoke inspect.

My suggestion is to create a new profile and install Firebug. You
probably have some old stuff in your current profile that is causing
the stfu thing you mention.
