Sorry my mistake: you need to do step #1 here, after you create a new
profile.
I changed the Wiki page to fix my instructions.

I guess "starts responding"? If you have some problem that is causing
lots of Firefox error messages, then you will get a lot of lag and
with Firebug it can be five times worse.  The -jsconsole on the
command line may help (I added it to the Wiki instructions:
http://getfirebug.com/wiki/index.php/FAQ#Firefox_starts_but_fails_to_show_a_user_interface)
