This is almost certainly not a Firebug bug as you can guess. I think you will need to create a new Firefox profile, copy over you bookmarks, and install addons. There is something in your configuration that is broken. You can try looking Firefox > Tools > Error Console, try running firefox.exe -jsconsole, try installing the tracing version 1.5X.3, http://getfirebug.com/releases/firebug/1.5X.
