No version of Firebug has any problem in this area. My guess is that
you have a option set that you don't realize or you have interference
from another extension or you are trying the feature on a site without
margins or padding.  If you have tried my suggestion using either
1.6a20 from getfirebug.com/releases/firebug/1.6X or 1.5.4 available
from http://addons.mozilla.org and you still have problems, the
solution that will almost certainly work for you (at some pain) is a
new Firefox profile, http://getfirebug.com/wiki/index.php/FAQ.
