This is working on my machine (I am having all the side panels) Try to create a new Firefox profile and install only Firebug into it http://getfirebug.com/wiki/index.php/FAQ#Installing_in_a_clean_profile
If it helps, find the difference between these two profiles and let us know what caused the problem. Perhaps a collision with another extension?
