Anthony, I don't want to offend you, but did you never see a split button? E. g. Office suites like MS Office or OpenOffice use them for their background and text color buttons.
But obviously you're not the only one complaining about the current solution, so we really should rethink that. Probably the easiest solution would be to set extensions.firebug.showStatusIcon to true by default, because it also doesn't make sense to me, that the Start Button is that far from the Firebug dialog. Another solution could be to move the dialog up by default, but that could conflict with the integrated Web Developer tools of Firefox. So maybe somebody else has a better idea for this.
