My solution was to downgrade to Firefox 20.0.1 until this problem is fixed.
There's a link on this page: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-older-version-of-firefox After installing, make sure to go to Options / Advanced / Update and mark "Never Check For Updates". Obviously this is not ideal so remember to monitor this thread and upgrade once FF 21 or 22 has been patched. Everything's fast for me again. Thanks goodness!
