A tad late and maybe it's already solved for everybody but it seems like Firefox took it upon itself to "remove" the Firebug icon. I saw that it had disappeared (around this time frame) and after verifying the plugin was installed and up-to-date I right clicked on the toolbar and chose "Customize" Dragged and dropped the Firebug icon back.
