I believe -n option is for testing (-n tells gated not to update
the kernel routing table).
I've setup firewalls with gated, but not with a scenario that
you are explaining.
If you can access an O'Riley book (TCP/IP Network Administration by
Craig Hunt, 2nd Edition, that has some very good information on
OSPF and gated).
