this may be explained by the word ELITE, which is a buzzword in hacking
circles. Used by some "hackers" elite refers to their status (often
self-inferred) among their peers. In the world of hackers, such words are
often written in symbols which resemble the original word. In this case
ELITE is written as 3|33+, or l33t (where ee substitutes phonetically for
ie) or eLiTe or any such combination of other ASCII chars that resemble
the original word.
the choice of port 31337 probably followed this morphology:
Elite -> 3|33+ -> 31337
For me, its useful to understand hacker terminology, (even to be a hacker)
as to be able to parse such undecipherable behaviour taking place on our
systems.
