Well you could look for the Server: xxx line in the reply from the
server.. To get that you can either issue a GET or HEAD request (HEAD
only gets the headers)..
For instance:
hostname% telnet www.microsoft.com 80
Trying 207.46.131.13...
Connected to microsoft.com.
Escape character is '^]'.
HEAD / HTTP/1.0
HTTP/1.0 403 Access Forbidden
Server: Microsoft-IIS/4.0
Date: Wed, 19 May 1999 18:31:47 GMT
Content-Type: text/html
Content-Length: 172
Connection closed by foreign host.
The Server: line tells me they are running Microsoft-IIS/4.0..
