Hi,
as I received some off-list flame to my reply Tue May 25 09:34:18 1999 on the
question of [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] I should like to add something to this.

(1) Any name of some person and/or hers or his mail address is only given as the
author in citation of some former mail of this person by myself.
I may not know her/him and she/he not me as I suppose.

    The "point" in <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Mon, 24 May 1999 13:13:20 -0400 was
    > The biggest problem with this design is not the firewall.. it's the
    > routing table...

(2) I may have misunderstood the real problem to <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> but the
    answer <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sun, 23 May 1999 16:32:38 -0400 may be sufficient.

The mentioning of linux and ip-chains was only given as some minor
suggestion to spread information. Reading the HowTo and playing with the
thing may leed to some better understanding to the unknowing (me included).

The historic mail of <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 1999-02-19 8:23:00 is found at the list
history of <http://www.rustcorp.com/> to be precise. It depends on some
mail to this list ( <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> ) in February that stated
some _serious_ _problems_ with the use of linux firewalling as it seems.

    That original mail was:
[mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] On Behalf Of Marcus J. Ranum
      Sent: Thursday, February 18, 1999 6:18 AM
Subject: Re: NAI Security Advisory: Vulnerability in NFR 2.0.2-Research

That mail shows the problem to usability of open software in regions with
    certain responsibilities on security needs.

If the kindly reader may know anything of the needs of firewalling for heavy
duty traffic sites with real security needs my mentioning of linux and
PC-box will surely show that something insufficient was and is mentioned.
Linux is yet no mission critical operating system, maybe never becomes one.

In no way I want to start some discussion on linux here again. You had have
enough of this in former time as it seems. In no way I think this list has to
deal with some playground things. Firewalling is serious stuff. But the kind
of some questions of others on this list show to me that not everybody may be
the expert himself or herself. But you have true experts here for sure.
