hi,
IMHO what makes a good os for security is one that allows me the
most granular control and STABILITY of my environment as well as is
infinitely flexible as the Internet itself has arguably proved itself to be.
It is fascinating to see the mindsets of different os admins on the
hand those that realize that they are given a infinite set of tools to
manipulate and customize their controlls and the other that depends
on a single source for their truth. OS stability is a good reason as any.
What one finds is that when one encounters a situation that is not
cookie cutter:-{ one needs a equally versatile toolbox which is
what the Unix Platform allows for that the other platform does not.
But if one has limited understanding of controlling ones environment
you are better off with the more silver trayed solution but realize there
is always a price to pay for that. IOW which one can allow you the
best 6 hours of sleep a night;-)? ..and what do you really need as the
best of breed to get the job done? Plus do you really think that you
know if they sold you a bag a goods when you take their word for it?
Scan the advisories and the writing on the services and systems not to
use becomes quite clear. Do a bit count on these and generate the best
that you can manage. Linux and *BSD are GREAT CHOICES for those that
like to drive:-) But last time i checked the Internet never sleeps so
when one needs to sit on ones hands well a solution is determined..
someone else has a field day. I would rather be able to control my *ways
then any surprises or hurry up and waits.
Best Regards,

Scientists have announced discovering a meteorite which will strike the
earth in March, 2028. Millions of UNIX coders expressed relief for being
spared the UNIX epoch "crisis" of 2038.
