I am not totally up to date on all the buzzwords, but as far as I know a
transparant proxy is a normal proxy which requires no special
configuration of the application it supports. For example, a transparant
HTTP proxy would not require you to enter the proxy server's address in
the browsers configuration.

It works by having the firewall automatically redirect HTTP traffic to the
machine running the HTTP proxy.
