let me just ask you this... Taking the steps to "ensure security" that you
mentioned before (*I.E. eliminating shares or using 'very good passwords'*),
would you open your corporate lan up to the surrounding 8-9 blocks
surrounding you?

 There are still ways to get logins etc, over the wire on a cable modem type
network.

 If you are looking into cable modem access for personal use at home I'd
also suggest a personal firewall or in the least a proxy server drummed up
tight.
