In reference to this thread please verify what type of Cable Modem your
Cable company uses before buying one. The particular cable company I use at
home uses the Com21 series of cable modems. While doing a little research
on this it appears that there are several different networking protocols,
cable modem authentication methods that may be used. And they may not be
cross compatible with others. CNET had some articles under cable modem and
also www.cablemodems.com had some information, there are many other sites
and reference materials. They had to authorize my cable modem access to the
cable by using the MAC address. BTW cable modem has the highest speeds for
all the devices that were listed with up to 30mbps download.
Good luck cabling

P.S. You should be able to check the FCC id number to find out who REALLY
made the equipment. ;)

Subject: Re: Comcast at Work internet cable access
Motorola makes the most popular cable modems, I believe. From what I
understand, all of their current models support encryption. This, of
course, doesn't mean that providers will enable this feature ... but at
least it's good to know that the equipment is capable. I don't think the
encryption is strong encryption (I think they use 56-bit keys), but I'd
personally feel comfortable with it.
