This is a great idea. I think I'll take a whack at something like
this, but probably in perl.  My ISP's mail server is cooperative.

I've attempted it twice, once successfully, the other time the router
was offline. Since I set it up I haven't had a need to use it. Since I
was only looking at port 80, it doesn't take long to chew through 1000
addresses. When I attempted it, I typically found about a dozen active
machines.

I appreciate your helping me find a better alternative.
