As far as I know 50ms is the shortest sync interval FW-1 will accept.
You can adjust the sync interval on a Solaris box with the command:

adb -w /etc/fw/bin/fw
fwsync_sync_time ?W hexa_value

to leave adb use $q.

Unfortunately I don't know how you adjust the sync interval on other platforms.

For true load balancing the solution with the Alteon switches really looks 
promising.
