Sendmail is complainging about the '/etc/mail/aliases' file because it is owned
by UUCP not ROOT. Also, sendmail is SUID'd to UUCP, which is not normal.
Sendmail considers any file writeable by anybody but root to be unsafe, unless
built to not do the checking.
There isn't any mention which version of sendmail that is being run, but from
some of the messages, I would guess somewhere around 8.8.0 or better. As far
as the '$j' variable nto being set, try running sendmail with the ' -bt'
option, and have it display what '$j' (FQDN) is currently set to, and while
there check what $m (domain name) is set to. If it is just the unqualified
host name, then you may want to add a line like "Dj$w.yourdomain.com" to
the sendmail.cf file. If $m isn't set, or not set correctly, add a line like
"Dmyourdomain.com'.
I would also recommend getting a copy of the O'Reilly book "Sendmail" second
edition.
