The problem is that it wastes valuable screen real estate with noise (the list
name), information which is already available elsewhere in the headers in
formats that good mail handling software can easily manipulate.

If you should happen to be processing your email anywhere in its path on a
Unix system, you should be able to arrange to filter it through a procmail
recipe that recognizes mailing list messages and does whatever you like to
them, including adding additional tags for your benefit to the subject line,
or filing them into different folders, or whatever.

All my messages for this list show up in a separate firewalls folder, and mutt
reads makes it easy to keep an eye on all the folders that have incoming
traffic automatically delivered to them.

I don't see the kind of Subject tagging you're talking about in the lists I
follow, but those lists don't tend to actively court people who can't handle
email well without them, so it's certainly not a fair sample.
