Actually, it was the proxy firewalls that came first, and
therefore are more "traditional" than the stateful packet
filters like Checkpoint. Those didn't even appear on the
scene until 1993 or so, about 2 generations behind the
"traditional" firewalls.
Technology-wise, it hardly makes a difference anymore.
The various firewalls do mostly the same things, though
in slightly different ways. In my opinion, the best criteria
on which to choose a firewall today are support, reputation
of the vendor, documentation, and interface.
