People who get a first look at the PIX often think "Oh, this
is just a modified IOS." Wrong, Wrong. Wrong.
IOS == cisco's router operating system.
PIX == A firewall product that cisco bought a few years
ago. I believe the company was called "Network Translation".
The PIX is an intel codebase. Anyone who has opened up (at
least an early model PIX) will see a PC motherboard inside.
When cisco bought the PIX company, the PIX OS was at version
2.x. Somebody inside of cisco decided that the PIX command
appearance should look more IOS-like. There are fundamental
internal differences between the PIX OS and IOS.
What was "save -f" in 2.x PIX became "write floppy" in
version 3.x of the PIX.
But if you use both the PIX and IOS in any serious way, you
will soon know they are different. It is actually a bit
amusing to watch an IOS expert using a PIX for the first
time becase they assume that the command line paramenter flow
is the same and they get all twisted up.
Repeat after me: PIX != IOS.
