Forgive my ignorance, but what are you trying to accomplish with your
firewall? If you're looking for something semi-stateful, you may want to
look at netfilter from the 2.3 kernels. I guess I'm just confused about
what you are looking for. For packet filtering, I've personally found
ipchains sufficient.
