If you are using Linux, then take a look at www.linuxdoc.org for heaps
of great information.  If you want to have a better look at linux, just
downlad it - it's free! check out either www.redhat.com (the RedHat
distribution), www.debian.org (the Debian distribution, my personal
favourite), www.suse.com (the SuSE distro), or if you're really feeling
adventurous, roll your own system from source :)

As for good Windows-based free firewalls, i'm not aware that such an
animal exists... for a half-decent firewall for windows, you're probably
going to have to shell out a bit of cash (correct me if i'm wrong!).  In
my humble opinion, windows is too inherently insecure to warrant putting
a firewall on it - it's sort of like a band-aid solution.  also, you
don't have anything TO firewall if you don't have file sharing turned on
or running the personal web server, or are not running whatever other
windows network services that happen to exist.
