How about upgrade your software? If you are vunerable to the ping of death
you are probably also vunerable to quite a few other attacks. If you can't
do that, put a firewall in front of your server and use that to protect
parts of your web server. Frankly, you'd be foolish not to have a firewall
doing some protection, or if nothing else, logging.
