I could have been lots of things, one might be that they used a WHOIS
server to find out your email address and other such details, another is
that they used FINGER, their are many ways to do this.

Hi, first of all sorry for the very oof topic question, but i dont know
who to ask else! I've got a question about the anonymity of my
E-Mail-adress:
I was recently chatting in a chat where my mail-adress is visible for
all users. but i never told anyone a relation between my adress and my
name.
so noone should be able to know my first name.
but a few days ago i received an unexpected mail to this adress of
someone who knows my first name!
how is this possible? is it probable that someone got access to the log
files of the chat and so knows my ISP and my IP, and then somehow got
access to the log files of my ISP and so got to know my name?
is this a possible explanation for this incident?
i would be very happy if u could help me cuz i'm very worried bout that
incident.
thanx to all
