Using ACLs to block instant messengers

Anybody use ACLs at the Internet access router to block instant
messenger applications like AOL Instant Messenger, ICQ, etc...?
Can someone point me to a URL which describes which ports these apps use
and/or has anyone sniffed these apps to determine which ports they use
and which would need to be blocked to prevent access to them?
