I'm one of the guys teaching some of the SANS firewall courses.

The idea of the SANS courses is to be non-vendor specific. Sure vendor
products are mentioned, but (at least in my case) you try and show the
good with the bad. The idea is to teach the student "these are good
fit situations for the product" rather than straight marketing hype. The
focus is on making the student a well rounded professional in which ever
track they have chosen (like firewalls).

So the idea behind the training is to give the student a broad range of
knowledge on the subject matter without doing it from the perspective of a
single product. There is also a big effort to keep the material current. I
know the firewall track material gets tweaked at least every 2-3 months.

As for the certification process, I think a lot of work has gone into
generating good practicals. Sure you can book worm your way through the
level one cert but you really need to prove you know how to go hands on to
get a level two. Level three is going to be even more difficult to
achive. IMHO there is _no way_ you can get level three without being hands
on and having a clue.

Any other questions, please feel free to shout.

Cheers,
Chris
