What I don't understand is why all of these devices are so bloody 
expensive. I could build you the same thing (basically) out of a 386 
biscuit PC, a PC/104 GPS card, running linux, and NTP v4, and it would 
probably cost me something like $400 in parts and have little 
development time.

My suggestion is to get some old PC, put a $100 GPS on it, slap some 
operating system on it (I suggest OpenBSD but you could run any x86- 
based unix) and use ntp. The cable you need to power and get signals 
from the GPS will probably cost you $40. It will be cheaper than any of 
the turnkey solutions, and easily replaced/rebuilt/repaired by you 
without doing an RMA.
