Al,
#I want to read some Firewall books. What do you recommend. Well actually
I
#want to read up on network security as a whole not just firewalls. I saw
#this book below at Barnes and Noble. It is an O'Reilly book.
All of the yellow Computer Security books from O'Reilly are good although
some of them are a little outdated now. My recommendation is if you really
want to understand firewalls or network security you first have to
understand the protocols that use the network. I suggest TCP/IP
Illustrated Volume 1 by W Richard Stevens. I have found it very helpful to
know a lot about DNS as well when installing UNIX firewalls. The best book
for learning about DNS is DNS and BIND 3rd Edition from O'Reilly. If you
are interested in learning more about crypto then read Applied Cryptography
by Bruce Schneier. To finish up my recommended reading list if you are
planning on learning about UNIX firewalls a good sysadmin book is the UNIX
Systems Administration Book 2nd Edition (there may be a 3rd Edition by now)
AKA the Red Book. It helps to have a good grounding in all of these areas
before jumping into firewalls and network security. I have learned a lot
from these books.
Regards,
Jeffery Gieser
