I have a suggestion to help this become easier to digest. Why doesn't the list admin
publish a How to post faq on a web site with a standardized subject line heading.

Then if there is a question being asked repeatedly, those of us who use this resource
can easily filter for the results. It only takes 15 minutes to implement said 'Policy'.

I mean we are for the most part technology adept, so lets use it people.

BTW, I have gone to lists.gnac.net, and I don't see a searchable archive of the posts.
Is there a Fire walls List website maintained somewhere? I can't locate it - even in
google:>

Phibo,

Many list members are happy to learn and to help. Many don't judge that
a question is silly just because they know the answer. on the other hand,
many get annoyed when similar questions are asked over and over, or when
they feel the guy hasn't done any efforts (his doesn't mean you did not, but
unless you explicitly say it in the message, we have no chance to know it).

Just judge by yourself: search "port 27374" on www.google.com. click on the
first returned URL, you'll find _your_ question asked by someone else. then
click on "next in thread" and you'll find an answer.

there's no personnal attack in the replies you got. it's just the expression of
a sort of frustration.

The sad thing about it is that even if we are saying it now, if you continue
following the list, you'll see a similar question. The problem is that people
select messages based on their interest, until they are interested in such a
thing, and they then jump to "new mail, send". that may be understandable,
but it's sad for the rest of us.

in the future, I suggest (this is just a suggestion) that if someone asks a
question,

- he says what he did to solve it. This not only shows that he did an
effort, but
it also helps in finding the right answer (how many times have we seen a long
thread starting with "can't do that", followed by "did you do this", "yes,
but it
doesnt' work", "ok. try doing this", "I already tied. ain't work"....)

- he gives a precise question. questions such as "how do I enable NAT" are
really
annoying.

- before asking, he checks the archives, then search on the web.

....

kind regards,

mouss
