You can use very simple tools like telnet or netcat to protected machines
on your network to see if they are reachable. Running a network sniffer on
your protected network, while trying to reach it from the outside will let
you know when you have sucessfully placed a packet through the firewall,
even if you could not SYNch a connection with the target host.
For really testing the firewall for fragmentation handling and it's
ability to process options and states, get fragrouter[1] and nmap[2].
