I got several answers to my question which was basically how to add a route
when you are using static NAT.  Thanks go to Gary Lee and Paul Haake who
pointed me in the right direction.  Here is the answer:

I was initially following Check Point instructions from the Architecture and
Administration manual on page 166 where it shows command syntax for routing
static NAT.  However, I was trying to route to the firewall's external IP
which did not work.  I tried various other methods but none worked.  In the
same manual on page 191 there are instruction for routing on a gateway with
two interfaces.  I used the route command with the firewall's internal IP
and it worked.
