If you're using a modem, one thing that might help is to use a call
back feature. That way, when the connection is authorized, it
hangs up the telephone and calls back at the pre-determined
number. I would guess your biggest vulnerabilities would be:
2) if someone dials in with a computer connected to the internet,
you could still face serious problems
1) if used by employees to dial in from home, the employee's kids
or roommates could present a problem
But what do you mean "firewalling with a modem"? If you want the
modem connection to go through a firewall, why not just set up a
firewall between the computer servicing the modem and the internal
network? Firwalls are not necessarily limited to between your
network and the internet.
