Title: [OFF TOPIC] sniffing
On a switch you will have to use some kind of "port copy " or "port monitoring". The ports on a switch only receive traffic for the mac address that is bound to that port. By copying the traffic from the desired portion of the network to the port with the Sniffer connected, the traffic can be captured and analyzed as desired. Again, this depends on the switch that you are using and the type of NIC you are using for the Sniffer. Some NICs cannot be put into "promiscuous" mode where they can copy traffic off of the segment that is not intended for the monitoring station.

Subject: [OFF TOPIC] sniffing

Sorry if this is an off-topic question.

Is there a way to sniff packets from a network using switches instead of hubs?
I tried sniffing using ethereal, but I am not able to sniff packets.

Thanks!
