Hi Marc,

I'd say modern security started out from early UNIX networking/user
accounting and early network routing. (You can hardly attack what you
don't
have a route/reverse route/path to/from).
Nevertheless you can easily go back farther in time (mainframe era,
...).
I'd rather define firewalling as a measure
for securing services/entities and the boxes/networks they are residing
on.
Two basic approaches: Make it hard to get there (routing, encapsulation
...)
or make it hard to get through a firewall. In the latter case you are
already
knocking at the door.
Vietse Venemas tcpwrapper is around for quite a while and together with
the TIS firewall toolkit certainly a milestone. I'd really suggest to
have a look at
the TIS-Package, pretty much the mother of a lot of firewalling
technology.
What's commonly known as "standard access-lists" is around for a while
too.
The big improvement of the last years was moving from stateless packet
filters
to stateful inspection engines. Latest & argueably greatest are
Proxy/Application Layer Firewalls with content filtering capabilities,
load ballancing, hot-standby, and
a lot uf unresolved issues :-). DoS/DDoS responses and IDS are very new
too.
Denying routing information is a quite old approach to security as well,
as
is the concept of bastion hosts. VLAN technology was introduced
rather late, with the exception of password hashing/encryption. The
history
of cryptography is as old as mankind.

Maybe that offers some starting points.
