--------------------
I recently achieved my SANS GCIA certification. Even if I hadn't gone for
the certification, the Intrustion Analysis (IA) course was well worth the
time and expense. In taking the exams and doing the practical, it was much
harder than anything else I've done in a long time. Just the practical took
over 20 hours of solid work to gather and analyse the information.
Although I had basic knowledge of IA before attending, the four days of
concentrated learning gave me a firm foundation on which to expand once I
got back into the "real world". I have already put the training to good use
at the office in analysing several reconnaissance probes on our network and
also tracing/analysing several "unknown" activities on our internal network.
In fact, network security has now become an offical part of my job.
As for what it's worth in the market, that I don't know. I know HR
departments like people with "pieces of paper". However, since I haven't
gone out into the market since getting the GCIA I don't know if it will
translate into real money.
Hope this helps. If you want to talk further on this, call or drop me a
line.

Subject: Slightly off topic - Value of SANS GIAC certification
Hi,
I'd really appreciate it if people were willing to share their experiences
with the SANS GIAC certifications, as well as give their views of the value
of these in the market.
Replies to private email please.
Take care,
Andrew
