This is from TechNet: (and so therefore 'Cats With Big Lips etc.....') :)

"There are two interfaces, NetBIOS and Sockets. NetBIOS applications, like
net view, will try netbios cache first, then WINS (if its a client to WINS)
then Broadcast, then LMHOSTS file, then HOSTS file and finally DNS. Socket
applications, like ftp, telnet, www, use a different order. It checks local
hostname, then HOSTS file, then DNS, then netbios cache, then WINS, then
Broadcast and finally LMHOSTS file.

Knowing this order helps a lot in diagnosing name resolution problems,
including the cases where the name is resolved correctly by sockets but not
by netbios applications or vice versa. HOSTS and LMHOSTS files could be very
useful for troubleshooting."

*I think it's
*
*Cache, Host, Lmhost, Dns, Wins and then broadcast
*
*Assuming that you are using DNS as a resolving method...
