Actually MRTG does use SNMP gets to read interface stats,
but only ifInOctets and ifOutOctets. (in its basic config)

MRTG uses this info to generate HTML pages containing GIF
images which provide a live visual representation of
bandwidth usage daily, weekly, monthly and yearly.

Certainly, if you know the SNMP OID, you can monitor the
other stats you listed below and graph these categories
over time as well.

And yes, I agree that it would be better to have
the other categories.
That way if something other than high bandwidth utilization
was causing poor performance you would have a distinct
indication of where the problem might lie.

Wouldn't one be much better off utilizing the counters from reading the
Interface statistics

(i.e.:
ifInOctets
ifInDiscards
ifInErrors
ifOutDiscards
ifOutErrors

then also read from the ICMP Inbound and Outbound Counters

icmpInMsgs
icmpInErrors
icmpInDestUnreachs
etc, etc

then take the counts and push it to some sort of MRTG package or Trend
Analysis application..

One can then establish statistics on the following categories;

Availability
Confidentiality
Integrity
Authenticity
